June 2026
Commencement has arrived and another year is in the books! As we prepare to say goodbye to one Caltech president and welcome another, many of us are reflecting on our accomplishments over this past year and longer. Our office had one of the best years for outreach, with partners throughout Southern California and Caltech volunteers who were staff, faculty, postdocs, graduate students and undergrads. Thanks to lots of active club outreach as well as biology professors who offered extra credit for science night outreach, we had full rosters at the fourteen science nights and expos we attended this year. We had monthly STEM learning at Hastings Branch library, an inaugural Women in STEM Sciences Day for 65 middle school girls, a group of PUSD middle schoolers doing their first ever competitive Science Olympiad competition, and so many other contacts with local kids, families, and educators, all thanks to Caltech volunteers who dedicated time to share their knowledge and experience. Thank you to every one of you, and we look forward to working with you again!
To those of you who have your Caltech degrees as of this past Friday, congratulations! We've benefitted from your time here, and we hope you'll stay in touch, wherever you land, and that you'll keep doing outreach in whatever community you find yourself.
Caltech Educational Outreach Art Contest
We know a lot of you out there are great artists, doodlers and designers, in addition to your many other talents. We're hoping you might put some of that creative energy to use for our office and make some graphics we'll use for swag and stickers we can hand out at events and during orientation. To that end, we're presenting an art competition, open to everyone in the Caltech community!

Family STEM Activities at Pasadena Parks After Dark!
Pasadena Parks and Recreation is hosting weekly movie nights at parks throughout Pasadena this summer. Each movie night will kick off with free food and a booth fair, and they are inviting Caltech to host a booth at each event with informal, fun science night-type demonstrations and hands-on activities.
If you'd like to volunteer and do a family-friendly STEM activity, sign up here: https://www.volunteersignup.org/8M7FR or reach out to Kitty Cahalan ([email protected]) for more details. We have many activity kits we can loan, and we can help with transportation if you don't have a car!
Youth STEM Activities at Pasadena Parks Summer Camps
Pasadena Parks and Recreation is hosting summer camps at five Pasadena parks (Victory, Robinson, Villa, Brookside and Washington) from June 15-July 31 for kids ages 5 - 12, and is seeking Caltech volunteers to come for part of one day to lead STEM activities with small groups. Which park, which day, which age group and which activity is up to you! Please reach out to Kitty Cahalan ([email protected]) to discuss details. CTLO can supply materials, activity kits, and rides to and from the venues if necessary.
YMCA Camp Rosie Seeks Volunteers
YMCA Camp Rosie in Glendale, a camp for youth who identify as girls, is seeking Caltech students who would be interested and available to lead a hands-on STEM activity with their girls this summer. Camp Rosie serves girls entering grades 6–9 and focuses on STEAM education, leadership development, healthy relationships, and personal growth in a fun and supportive environment.
They are looking for opportunities to expose our participants to STEM careers and interactive learning experiences. The camp runs during two weeks in July (see below), and they can work around volunteers' availability and interests when planning an activity.
